Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

Once you’ve become Medicare-eligible, you can enroll in Original Medicare, the traditional fee-for-service program offered directly through the federal government. You can also choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, a type of private insurance offered by companies that contract with Medicare (the federal government).
